A Grassroots effort...literally!

Yesterday, the Dixon gallery staff put down their pens, picked up shovels, and sported their most casual denim for an annual event called "Blue Jean Monday", an entire day devoted to pitching in, pulling up, and potting plants for the beautiful gardens.

With spring around the corner (wait, it's tomorrow!) and the annual Wildflower Plant sale next month, there was much work to be done and the staff wasn't afraid to get down and dirty in this fun "grassroots" effort. Even a thunderstorm couldn't slow this group down, proving that come rain or shine, the Dixon team is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

Carolyn Fly (Communications Associate) and Celia Chastain (Floriculturist) enjoyed pulling up ready-to-eat collard greens, artichokes, and kale from the edible gardens.

Bryony Petch (Outreach Coordinator) and Linley Schmidt (Adult Program Coordinator) carefully potted plants in preparation for the Wildflower Plant sale in April. These include the difficult-to-find natives to the latest cultivars of woody and  herbaceous plants.

Kim Rucker (Cutting Garden & Greenhouse Manager) shows Kevin Sharp (Dixon Executive Director) the proper way to plant labeling.

Chantal Drake (Director of Communications) remained focused on the task at hand while Linley Schmidt and Deborah Mason (Dixon Gardener) posed for a photo. Do you think she knew about the bunny ears? She does now.

And finally, Karen Strahan (Development Officer) took the title for Best Dressed, proving that one doesn't have to sacrifice fashion for manual labor.

The Dixon's Wildflower Plant sale will take place April 5th & 6th. To see all that's happening in our gardens or for more information, please visit www.dixon.org or check out our official Facebook page.
