The Dixon is pleased to host its first-ever Daffodil Show this spring. Daffodils are available in yellows, oranges, pinks, and whites in about every size and combinations of these colors imaginable. Over 25,000 cultivars have been registered with the American Daffodil Society. Plan to enter your favorite daffodils in this local show organized just for fun. And be sure to attend to find out which varieties won ribbons and grow well in the Mid-South. Volunteers will be available to answer questions and provide educational information about daffodils including the different divisions.
Information about entering daffodils in the Daffodil Show
- Anyone may enter daffodils in the show. This is a just-for-fun show and is not a standard daffodil show sanctioned by the American Daffodil Society.
- For best results, cut daffodils in the early morning or early evening. Blooms should be cut with a sharp knife or sharp pruning shears, or the stems can just be snapped off. The blooms should immediately be placed in warm water about 80 degrees F. As soon as all blooms have been cut, take them inside. If the water was not warm enough when you cut them outside, you can re-cut them and put them into warm water. The warm water causes the stem to take up more water, thus increasing the life of the flower. Inspect each bloom closely for dirt and other defects. Groom or clean if needed. Store your flowers in a cool place until it is time for the show.
- Daffodil entries will be received at the Winegardner Auditorium of Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Avenue, Memphis 38117, on Friday, March 18, from 1 until 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 19, from 9 until 10:30 a.m. Bring your cut flowers. You do not need to know the names (cultivars). However, if you do know the cultivars, please bring their names. If you need help entering your flowers in the show, trained volunteers will help show you how. Containers for the daffodils as well as wedging material will be provided by the committee.
- Judging will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
- The show will be open to the public from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
- Exhibitors should pick up their ribbons between 3 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
