DECEMBER 2 | Illustration, Illumination, and Text: An Ongoing Conversation
Dr. Matthew Heintzelman, Curator of Western European Manuscripts and Special Collections, Hill Museum and Manuscript Library

Manuscripts through the ages have been the locus of an exchange of ideas between Biblical text, the illustrations and the decoration. Far from being mere enhancements of the text, illustrations have often taken on a life of their own. From the earliest codex Bibles (the Codex Vaticana B or the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis) through Irish monastic manuscripts (Lindisfarne Gospels or the Book of Kells), and on through various late medieval “Bibles” (the Bible moralisée, Biblia Pauperum, or Speculum Humanae Salvationis), Christian Biblical manuscripts offer varying approaches to “reading” and understanding the Bible. This presentation will provide an overview of some of these illustrated and illuminated treatments of the text.
