Creating with Kaleidoscope Club

Have you heard about Kaleidoscope club?

For the younger artists, Kaleidoscope Club has the perfect mix of everything the Dixon has to offer.  Each week we’re inspired by something in the galleries or gardens, and we always end up with some creative projects meant to spark creativity and critical thinking.

Recently, we have been getting back to the basics, talking about the fundamentals of art. Participants looked at paintings from the Panama Canal exhibit to learn about composition. They also made their own collages, layering paper to create a background, middle-ground, and foreground.

Students learned about color, doing plein air sketching in the gardens. We looked at a color wheel while we sketched to learn about complimentary colors, which we used to outline our drawings (instead of the traditional black), and we ended up with some amazing and colorful drawings!

Value is another thing we learned about. Value is how dark or light a color is. We explored this by doing monochromatic self portraits. Each student picked one color, plus black and white, and made a painting. By the end of class, they were surprised at how many tones they could make such a limited palette.

Kaleidoscope Club is an after school program for children ages 5-9 years old. We meet every Wednesday from 4-5pm. Space is limited though, so please contact Melissa Bosdorf (761-5250 or mbosdorf@dixon.org) to reserve your spot.

Price per class: members $8; non-members $12. If your child goes to Willow Oaks Elementary School, Kaleidoscope Club is always free, just mention it when you make your reservation. Stay connected with the Dixon for more information, and we hope to see you soon!
