Member Spotlight: The Ullman-Pai Family

In our new Member Spotlight, we will be featuring member households that support and engage with the Dixon through diverse means. Up first, meet the Ullman-Pai family! Dedicated Dixon members since 2009, the Ullman-Pai family loves Family Days, art classes with Mr. JT, and being outdoors in the Dixon gardens. Read more about the Ullman-Pais below.

What are you most looking forward to doing at the Dixon once we reopen?

Eve (age 13) and Lucy (age 11) can't wait to start up their Saturday classes in 'ology with Mr. JT and I can't wait to WALK in the gardens while they are in class. We also look forward to the new art exhibits, as we miss them and you all!

What has been your favorite online activity the Dixon has offered?

We've made some monsters with JT and also a collage.  We think the local online presence has been great and it's kept us all connected. Thank you to the Dixon (along with other great Memphis institutions) for providing online fun during this trying time.  It makes us appreciate you all. Stay safe Memphis, in your home while creating and posting!

What is your favorite program or event at the Dixon?

We love the Dixon's Family Days and always have, ever since we moved to Memphis, TN, from Washington DC, in 2007.  The family days/nights that the Dixon puts on are such a gift to EVERYONE living in or near Memphis, TN. They are a breath of fresh air, full of fun and we look forward to them every quarter.  Not only do we now try to "spread the word" about family events, but Eve and Lucy have also helped to create booth at one of the family days that was designed FOR and BY kids. Eve taught a sewing lesson on her sewing machine and Lucy and her friend Jillian Dobbins created penguins and scenes with Sculpey at their booth.  Thank you Karen Stachan and others for including the gals. We're so glad we are part of the Dixon Family.

How are you staying engaged with the Dixon while sheltering at home?

Oh yes, sheltering at home.  We take this social distancing very seriously and hope everyone is too.  The gals are doing well with their distance learning (5th and 7th grade at St. Mary's Episcopal School) and Dad and I are cleaning, cooking and working in the yard a bit.  Thus far, the "sheltering at home" days have been beautiful and remind me of our special walks through our DIXON! We're all online quite a bit but LOVE exploring Evergreen neighborhood, where we reside, as well as biking through Overton Park and into Hein Park by Rhodes college.  Such a wonderful time to be on a bike, with the wind in our hair and face. We truly look forward to our time OUT each and everyday, even if it's raining. The kids love to draw and create during their down time and the weekends. We're hanging in there, ONE DAY AT A TIME, and hope everyone else it too. Oh, don't forget to be kind to your neighbors and those you pass, while walking, running or biking.

xo, Karen Ullman
