It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Every year, in preparation for the holiday season, the Memphis Garden Club (MGC) spends a week at the Dixon decorating and decking the halls of the Residence and Catmur Foyer. Since the founding of the Dixon in 1976, a natural involvement has developed with the Memphis Garden Club. MGC members serve the Dixon in a variety of volunteer capacities from board members to greenhouse potters. The Club’s Fine Arts Committee is even responsible for the Gallery’s bi-weekly and special events floral arrangements, including Christmas decorations.

The decoration of each room is headed up by a room captain, who oversees the look and holiday theme for that area, which may correspond to an overall theme. Last year’s theme of “Naturally Southern” featured rustic yet refined decorations celebrating the Dixon’s southern nature.

This year, the Garden Club pays tribute to the Dixon’s English roots and Edwardian Architecture with a Downton Abbey-inspired theme. “Downton Abbey: An Edwardian Christmas” incorporates the Dixon’s English-style grounds indoors with boxwoods and other greenery, as well as red and white poinsettias, amaryllis, and cyclamen.

Trees will be trimmed and decorations will adorn every room in the Residence from the top of the stairs to the front door. Room captains and their committees spend part of their year planning the Dixon’s holiday décor, and to thank them, the Dixon staff takes a night to celebrate their contributions throughout the year, with a party in the residence. All of the seasonal events that we look forward to at the Dixon—including the Holiday Soirée and tree lighting, music in the galleries, and holiday workshops and performances—are enhanced by the beautiful décor.

The Dixon is truly a magical place during the holidays, thanks to the beautiful and festive decorations by the Garden Club.

Stay tuned as next week the Garden staff decorates the grounds for holiday including the trimming of the big Christmas tree!
