This diptych, Different Sorts of Love, is part of Sargent’s Fairy Tales series. Though a work on paper, the overlapping floral forms and the kaleidoscopic patterns of these two panels are reminiscent of her fiber work. Colorful stylized flowers wind up and down the full length of each piece. On the left, sunnier, warmer jewel tones prevail, while the right panel’s floral patterns are shadowy and muted. Nestled amongst the flowers, familiar figures from classic fairy tales appear. In the upper left, tucked between pink and blue flowers, Cinderella looks down at her single yellow shoe. In the opposite panel, the Big Bad Wolf glowers down toward Little Red Riding Hood.
