Meet the Artist: Paula Kovarik

Meet Memphis 2020 artist Paula Kovarik. Paula received her Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She credits her mother with introducing her to quilting, which she began practicing in 2005. Informed by current events, science, history, and various other interests, Kovarik borrows from her sensibilities as a designer to create meaning through stitched compositions. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including American CraftFiber Art Now, and Art Quilting Studio.

Same But Not is a meditation on race and separation. Through the trajectory of two lines, one black on white fabric and the other white on black fabric, she follows the journey of two meandering threads. While at times the stitches appear to mirror one another incorporating similar shapes and symbols, they are unique in their compositions. Inherent to the nature of quilting, an inverted image is visible on the back of this artwork. Kovarik especially appreciates this aspect of her medium as it makes way for new ideas.
