Preview of Perennials: Munch and Learn Recap by Linley Schmidt, Public Programs Coordinator

Munch and Learn is a brown bag lecture series at the Dixon that happens each Wednesday from noon to one o’clock. You bring your lunch, and we provide sodas and a speaker! This week Dale Skaggs, the Dixon’s Director of Horticulture, talked about perennials that will be available at the Dixon Garden Faire on April 24 -25 from 9:00am – 4:00 pm.

Dale is a fount of knowledge about soil, light and pruning preferences of plants.  He also typically knows where each plant is originally from and how it has been hybridized. And much of the time he even knows who hybridized it! As an added bonus, Dale is a master of pronouncing all those complicated scientific names. Dale talked about flowering perennials as well as those that are interesting for their foliage. Some plants that will be available are native to the area and other’s have been hybridized in order to enjoy our climate a bit more than they would otherwise. The garden staff provided a list of the perennials that will be available, so there’s no chance of forgetting what plants you want to buy at the Faire. Dale’s passion for plants and gardening comes through in all his talks and one can’t help but get infected by it! I can’t wait to buy some new additions to my yard at this year’s Garden Faire.

Next week is our 300th Munch and Learn!  Come hear Kevin Sharp talk about Whistler and Sargent: Two American Expats in London.
