Tour at Two: Honoré Daumier

  • Honoré Daumier was a prolific Realist printmaker and painter in nineteenth century France. He produced thousands of lithographs that were distributed in Parisian newspapers over the span of his long career.
  • Daumier’s satirical eye took aim at all aspects of nineteenth century French society, including family life. They are in many ways snapshots of a particular moment in time, with their keen recordings of Parisian clothing and language, but on a deeper level they offer timeless commentary on the ups and downs of parenthood.
  • The image captioned as Crrrrrrr...Woman! To leave a man alone for four hours with these three howling children, pokes fun at how ill-equipped many mid-nineteenth century middle class men were to care for their own children.
  • Daumier’s original sketch for this image bore the title Les enfants charmants, or “The charming children.”

Happy Father’s Day!

Honoré Daumier, Crrrrrr... Woman!.... To leave a man alone for four hours with these three howling children, August 28, 1838; Lithograph on newsprint; Gift of Dr. Armand Hammer, 1987.21
