Tour at Two: Mae Aur

Memphis artist Mae Aur employs bright colors, round contours, and an overall smooth surface when creating her unique wood sculptures. Her skill with woodcarving is evident in the satisfying neatness of each piece of the sculpture and the impeccable way in which they are joined together. These works often combine an interest in historic artistic symbols and traditions from around the world with the Millennial generation’s clever optimism. Though she also works in a variety of other media, Aur’s wall-mounted wood sculptures have garnered attention from collectors and curators around the country.

The cheerfully commanding Aging Remedy is one of Aur’s most significant works. The fountain motif, incorporation of running-water sound effects, and witty title reference both the fifteenth-century quest for the Fountain of Youth as well as contemporary culture’s obsession with youthful perfection. This idea is amplified by colors, perhaps suggesting the artist’s own quest for perfection in her work.
