Exhibition Lecture: Black Artists in America: From the Great Depression to Civil Rights
November 14, 2021
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Dixon Gallery and Gardens
Dr Earnestine Jenkins, Guest curator, Black Artists in America, Professor, Department of Art, University of Memphis
Dr. Jenkins will discuss the work of African American artists from the 1930s to the 1950s. The decades between the Great Depression and post-World War II were a turbulent period in American history. Defined by cultural, political, and social upheaval, artists responded by experimenting with a great diversity of styles from Social Realism to Abstract Expression, as they challenged aesthetic traditions and grappled with the relationship of the arts to American identity. The first half of the twentieth century in America was an exceptionally creative period for the development of modern art. This lecture highlights the contributions of Black artists to our national experience.
