Iris Harkavy June 16 - August 29, 2010 The Dixon is pleased to present new outdoor sculpture by Memphis artist, Iris Harkavy.
After 14 years as a social worker, Iris decided during the 1980’s to attend the Memphis College of Art, from which she received a degree in art. Her three-dimensional work is always bright and cheerful, and influenced by her career in social work, always tells a human story focusing on the family. She incorporates color and whimsy into her work and uses humor to deal with serious issues. Iris has recently developed new media which allows her to install sculpture outdoors in the elements. Visit the Cutting Garden, Woodland Garden, and South Lawn to see her work which is always a favorite of children and the young at heart.
Dixon Gardening School: Basic Gardening Principles for the Mid-South SOLD OUT!
The Dixon gardening school is designed as a once-a-month series to help the novice gardener gain knowledge and confidence that will translate into better gardens. These classes will be two-hour sessions covering elements of design and theory, hands-on techniques of planting and maintaining a garden, plant selection, and the tools used to create gardens. Get recommendations about particular varieties of plants that Dale Skaggs and the Gardens staff maintain here at the Dixon. Learn which plants thrive in full sun and which do well in shade, which can tolerate drought, and which ones need frequent moisture. Each session will include adequate time to obtain answers to participants’ questions. The new gardener will particularly benefit from attending all ten sessions, but these classes are structured so they can also be taken as individual discrete units. Details: Ten sessions, once a month: January through October 2010 First quarter Saturdays: January 9, February 13, and March 13, 10:30 -12:30 Reservations required. Space limited. For the year-long series: $100 members, $125 non-members. For a single session: $15 members, $20 non-members. Meet in the Hughes Pavilion
