Friday, October 30 2009, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Enjoy five different beer styles handcrafted by local brewers in tiny 10-gallon batches using the freshest and highest quality grains, yeast, and hops available. These unique all-grain selections are brewed by artisans using the Beer Judge Certification Program guidelines.  Beers will be paired with foods that accentuate and compliment the beer flavors for the ultimate Brewers’ Feast.

Space limited. Reservations required. (901) 761-5250.

Dixon Members: $50

Non-Members: $60

The brewers:

Mike Lee:  Owner of Mid-South Malts, a local homebrew supply store.  Mike has 20 years of experience brewing beers.  Mike is the Pro Am winner this year for the second time, and he will travel this fall to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, representing his beer.  His recipe will be on tap at Bosco’s later this year.  Mike is a BJCP recognized beer judge.

Dale Skaggs:  Director of horticulture at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.  Dale has been an avid home brewer for 19 years and an all-grain brewer for 10 years.  He started brewing all-grain beers with then home brewer Jeff Althouse, who left his teaching job in 2005 and is now the owner of Oakshire Brewing in Eugene, Oregon.  Oakshire Brewing has recently expanded into Alabama markets.  While in college in Corvallis, Oregon, Dale assisted in brewing batches at the local microbrewery, Oregon Trail.

The Beer:

Kolsch- very light straw-colored ale which has pilsner malt as the base and a crisp clean lager finish. This style is associated with Cologne, Germany, and is a style not readily commercially available in U.S. markets.

Belgian Wit- light pale-colored ale brewed with the addition of wheat and spices. This is an ancient style of beer that has evolved and is currently available commercially in the U.S. as Hoegaarden and Blue Moon.

Belgian Dubbel- A coppery amber ale originating from the monasteries in the Middle Ages.  This is bold, rich, complex bigger beer that has limited availability commercially, with Chimay Premium being the benchmark.

Raspberry Porter- A darker beer brewed with the addition of raspberry to balance out the roasted malt flavors in this complex beer with a unique taste.

Barley Wine- This special treat is a 10-year-old ale that was aged for three months in an oak Jack Daniels barrel. It is a full bodied beer that is robust and rich, yet surprisingly smooth with hints of vanilla, oak and bourbon.  It will be served in small glasses because it greater than 15 percent alcohol by volume.
