If you are a continuous learner, are interested in art, history, or education, we need you! Join the Dixon’s Docent team and create meaningful experiences for your community while learning, making new friends and surrounding yourself with beautiful and meaningful art.
Important skills in a Docent:
- Enthusiasm for art, art history, history, and community engagement
- Effective interpersonal abilities
- Practiced communication
- Continuous learning
- Access to email and digital communication
- Complete and pass a background check
- Multi-lingual is a plus
The Dixon is accepting applications for our volunteer docent program on a rolling basis and will reach out to applicants when new cohort dates are set.
A successful candidate should have an interest in art, a friendly personality, good communication skills, and a desire to help others learn.
An art background is not required. Docent training will cover Dixon and Permanent Collection information, quarterly training on changing exhibitions, interpretation techniques, and tour leading practice.
Docents are required to commit to two years and attend all training sessions to stay up to date on current exhibitions and museum events.
What a Docent does
- Leads guided visits for different ages.
- Attends Docent training sessions.
- Participates in Ask Me (about this artwork) at Dixon events.
- Attends exhibition Lectures and Munch & Learn sessions.
- Assists Public Programs Coordinator with group visits/tour evaluations.
- Mentors new Docents.
- Volunteers at Dixon events.
