Garden Shadow
Newly Installed Garden Sculpture
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is excited to announce the installment of a new sculpture in the garden. Specifically created for the Brenda and Lester Crain Sculpture Circle, view "Garden Shadow." Earl Dismuke is a sculptor based in Oxford, Mississippi. His works, often large in scale and installed in public areas, evince his heartfelt commitment to community engagement through the arts. Dismuke intentionally crafts his works with simple lines and shapes, allowing them to speak to a wide audience, yet their simplicity belies the complexity of the process of their creation.
Inspired by Walter Anderson's seven motifs: straight line, jagged line, wavy line, circle, half-circle, spiral, and S-curve. Each curve of the painted and welded steel is designed to live in harmony with the many trees surrounding the formal gardens and the shade they provide.
The verticality of the sculpture and its dark painted surface make this a unique addition to the surrounding greenery. Like much of Dismuke’s work, "Garden Shadow" walks a delicate line between both levity and gravity, and raw and refined. We invite all Dixon visitors to follow your feet past the South Lawn to discover this piece!
