Scary Art, Spooky Music: The Sublime and the Supernatural in Art & Music Histories

Rebecca Howard, Associate Professor of Art History, and Ewelina Bockowska, Assistant Professor of Musicology, University of Memphis

Dr. Rebecca Howard received her Ph.D. in Early Modern Art History in 2017 as a Presidential Fellow at The Ohio State University. She also received her M.A. from Ohio State and her B.A. from Christopher Newport University. Her research interests include portraiture, expressions of identity, memory, early modern studies of the brain and anatomy, word and image theory, and mnemonic tactics and commemorative devices. Other research and teaching interests include early modern garden and villa designs, Ancient Egyptian influences in Renaissance Italy, and global paths of exchange in the early modern world. She is currently editing her first book project, Portraiture and Mnemonics in Renaissance Italy: Commemoration through Body and Brain, which is under contract with Amsterdam University Press. Her pedagogical interests in cross-cultural currents in the early modern world recently led to an essay contribution for the forthcoming pedagogical resource, Teaching Race in the European Renaissance: A Classroom Guide. In addition, she has published articles on topics related to portraiture and commemoration in the Journal of Material Culture, Source: Notes in the History of Art, and Studies in the History of Gardens and Designed Landscapes, to name a few.

Ewelina Boczkowska is Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Memphis. Her research explores relationships among music, trauma, and memory, with particular interests in émigré composers, film music, and European cinema. She has published widely, co-edited two books on music in postwar European film, and serves as a co-editor of Routledge’s Music and Sound on the International Screen series. Boczkowska earned her PhD in Musicology from UCLA and previously served as Distinguished Professor at Youngstown State University.
