Berthe Morisot/Bill Scott: Gardens of Paradise

Apr 25, 2027 - Jul 11, 2027

Presented by: Joe Orgill Family Fund for Exhibitions

Organized by: Organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis is pleased to be the organizing institution for an exhibition examining the relationship between the contemporary Philadelphia painter Bill Scott (b. 1956) and the work of French Impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841 – 1895).

As a student in Paris in the 1970s, Bill Scott met Berthe Morisot’s grandsons and over the ensuing years, he became not just a deep admirer but also one of the world’s leading scholars on Morisot’s work, which naturally informed his own painting practice.  Gardens of Paradise focuses on a series of paintings Morisot undertook in the late 1880s and early 1890s inspired by her travels to the French villages of Cimiez and Mézy.  More than 130 years later, Scott draws great inspiration from these images, which provide a catalyst for his own explorations of energy, vivid color, lines, patterns, and life in the natural world.

Berthe Morisot/Bill Scott: Gardens of Paradise will present a selection of Morisot’s paintings from the 1880s and 1890s alongside Scott’s near-abstract interpretations of them.  Works by artists in Morisot’s close circle will also be featured.  The exhibition will be comprised of seventy works of art drawn from public and private collections in the United States and Europe, and will be accompanied by a Dixon-produced catalogue.
