Sally Hughes Smith: Adrenaline Rush

Jul 16, 2023 - Oct 1, 2023

Plein-air painter Sally Hughes Smith seeks inspiration from the landscapes of the American South as well as locations she has observed while traveling in Europe. Her bright palette and loose brushwork reveal her interest in Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting, especially the dappled effects of light on verdure. Her canvases demonstrate her careful observation of the natural world and deft handling of oil paint. Through her energetic application of the medium, Smith harnesses the luminosity of paint, enabling her to convey the warmth of the sun on a summer day and the patterns created on the ground as light filters through the trees and leaves above.

Born in Memphis and based in Charleston, South Carolina, Smith’s work has been exhibited at venues across the Southeast. In addition to her painting practice, she is also the author and illustrator of a children’s book, Rosebud Roams Charleston, and has led workshops on oil painting at the Gibbes Museum.

Exhibition sponsored with great appreciation by the Sanders Family: Reid, Chris, Aubrey, and Reid
