Dixon summer interns reflect
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is fortunate to have hosted five interns during the summer of 2025. We hope that internship opportunities at the Dixon are more than just information on a résumé, but a chance to learn behind the scenes of a functioning museum and the day-to-day life of a cultural nonprofit. This season, we invited our interns to share their perspectives on what they’ve learned. This cohort not only aided exhibitions and educational programming but also played an important role in making this a successful summer!
Gardens Intern
Hannah
During your time with the Dixon what did you learn?
This internship has deepened my appreciation for hands-on horticulture and reinforced my desire to design meaningful, plant-centered spaces. Beyond the technical skills I’ve gained, I’ve grown more confident in my ability to observe, adapt, and care for the living things that shape our landscapes. From sowing seeds in the greenhouse to supporting mature plants in the garden, I’ve loved discovering each plant’s unique preferences and how to adjust the environment to help them thrive. The Dixon has truly become a part of my story as a future landscape architect, and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity.
Is there something you will miss after your experience here ends?
There are many things I’ll miss after leaving the Dixon, but I’m especially dreading saying goodbye to our garden cat, Oliver. I’ve never considered myself a cat person, but every morning he greets me with such warmth. He’s a sweet and special part of my Dixon experience.
Education Intern
Reghan
How was your experience working in Dixon's Education department?
Every day there were new goals, obstacles, and creative projects for me to undertake, which is something I looked forward to each day. I will also miss the opportunities this internship gave me to learn about teaching art to all age groups and levels of ability. Interning at the Dixon provided me so much insight into the way museums and their educational programs function, and also reminded me how much I value our museums here in Memphis.
Curatorial Intern
Will
What's one memory that you'll take with you after your intern experience?
I remember going to an antique store with Ellen and Julie to look at some paintings we were interested in buying. I just followed them around, but I learned so much by just listening to their conversations about the quality of the art and which paintings they were thinking about choosing. It is very satisfying to have a job in an environment where learning is celebrated and my coworkers share my enthusiasm for what we study.
During your time with the Dixon, was there something that surprised you?
Yes. I was surprised by just how many staff members we have who all do so many different things. I had never considered that running a museum would require more than just art experts, and through working this job, I have met landscapers, security guards, and business administrators who contribute just as much valuable work as the curators.
Communication Intern
Mariah
What has been the biggest learning opportunity during your time at the Dixon?
One of the biggest learning opportunities during my time at the Dixon was having the chance to explore my own creative freedoms while still aligning with the Dixon's marketing style. I was encouraged to get out of my comfort zone, explore social media trends, and contribute fresh ideas; all while learning how to maintain brand consistency. I also got a behind-the-scenes look at how much planning and strategy go into every project. I know these experiences will benefit me in the long run.
What’s one memory that you’ll take with you after your intern experience?
A memory that really stands out is filming and helping with the Hydrangea video series that will launch in 2026. Being part of a project from concept to execution was such a rewarding experience. Seeing it all come together and knowing I had a hand in something so creative made me feel proud of the work I contributed. The creativity, planning, and impact really brought everything full circle for me.
Development Intern
Morgan
What’s one memory that you’ll take with you after your intern experience?
One standout memory is from my very first week, the “Mystery in the Garden” event. I was blown away by the care, creativity, and coordination the whole team put into it. Seeing everything come together so beautifully, and watching guests genuinely enjoy themselves while supporting a good cause, really cemented for me that nonprofit work is something I want to pursue long-term. It was a moment of clarity and pride.
