André Marty, the Graphic Arts Publisher who Redefined Originality
Donna Stein, Independent Curator
Independent curator Donna Stein will introduce you to L’Estampe originale, a rare graphics portfolio published in France during the mid-1890s that is widely regarded as one of the greatest collaborations in the history of printmaking. The dynamic and eclectic portfolio is a remarkable tribute to printmaking, especially lithography, as an original and experimental medium for a path-breaking generation of revolutionary artists ranging from Whistler to Gauguin to Toulouse-Lautrec. With 95 prints by 74 artists, L’Estampe originale presented nearly every stylistic movement during the second half of the nineteenth century from Impressionism to the fin-de siècle Art Nouveau.
