Exhibition Lecture: Mary Sims's Multiplicity

Marina Pacini, Mary Sims biographer

Over the course of her life, Mary Sims produced a distinctive body of work. She experimented with various media before developing her signature style in 1968. Describing her paintings as representational does not do justice to her adoption of an almost hyper-realism, with her subjects—whether people, animals, things, or places—receiving an attention to detail that resulted in truthful (if also witty) portraiture, as well as glimmering surfaces of bold color and intriguing textures. She distilled the important aspects of her subjects, while also imbuing them with lively, and often humorous characteristics. This talk will present an overview of her life and her artistic practice.
