'Justin Bowles: Boukay'

For years, Memphis artist Justin Bowles has been incorporating various forms of paper—newsprint, glossy magazine paper, cardstock, cardboard, etc.—into brilliantly colorful and clever works of art. These works have ranged from still-life shadowboxes to abstract quilt-like pieces to representational collages on canvas to colorfully enticing installations.

In Justin Bowles: Boukay, the featured artist utilizes paper and other everyday materials in order to create her own colorful world. Her current exhibition in the Mallory/Wurtzburger Galleries features paper floral shadowboxes, screen-printed wallpaper, ‘force fields,' and large, hanging fruit and floral designs that complement the elaborately detailed paper garments featured in Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper. Bowles' floral still lifes are inspired by Old Master Dutch artists, and her dramatic 'force fields' speak to the importance of textiles in her aesthetic.

The opening reception for Justin Bowles: Boukay will take place on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 6:00 to 8:00pm for Art After Dark: Meet the Artist. In addition, Bowles will be the featured instructor for Saturday Sketch (for ages 15 and up) on November 11 and December 9, 10:00-11:00am. On both Sunday, November 19 and Sunday, December 10, Bowles will lead Tours at Two. In her presentation Tracing the Pattern of Inspiration at Munch and Learn on Wednesday, December 20 at noon, Bowles will speak about her unique artistic process, the way she collects materials, and her focus on working intuitively.

Bowles’ joyful and creative installation in the Mallory/Wurtzburger Galleries will provide an unforgettable experience for visitors to the Dixon this fall! Please stop by soon to view this captivating exhibition.
